The short answer

Touch problems include no response, broken lines during swipes, automatic input without contact—often called ghost touch—and incorrect multi-touch counts. Intermittent issues can come from moisture, poor protectors, charger interference, app stalls or system load. A problem that repeatedly appears in the same area, including in the system interface, is more likely related to the touch layer, connector or display assembly.

Safety firstIf the screen is lifting, the device is swollen or hot after liquid exposure, or it suffered a severe drop, stop pressing and testing it. Disconnect charging and contact qualified service; a swollen battery requires careful handling.

Identify the pattern

Check whether the issue occurs in one app, only while charging, or at the same physical location in both portrait and landscape. A web page can record only the touch events delivered by the browser. Browser gestures, system edge gestures and performance stalls can make a trace appear broken, so one gap is not proof of hardware failure. Cross-check with the system keyboard, dragging home-screen icons and another app.

If the issue appears only while charging, try a compatible power adapter, cable and outlet in good condition. Stop using damaged or unknown accessories. Low temperature, gloves or very dry fingers can reduce capacitive-touch reliability. A missed input in a game may also come from network latency, low frame rate or control layout, so test in an offline system interface first.

Step-by-step test

  1. Disconnect charging and accessories. Dry your fingers and screen, remove a thick or damaged protector and take off any case pressing against the bezel.
  2. Restart the device. Close overlays, accessibility touch tools and apps that may intercept gestures, then install a stable system update if available.
  3. Open the touch trace test. Draw slow parallel lines across the entire area with one finger, then test two-finger pinch gestures. Keep a steady speed and avoid starting from system gesture edges.
  4. Rotate the device 90 degrees and repeat. If the problem rotates with page content, software layout may be involved. If it remains at the same physical location, record a video, the trigger conditions and whether a charger was connected.

When to contact support

Back up your data and seek service if a fixed area remains frequently unresponsive after cleaning, removing accessories, disconnecting charging and restarting, or if persistent ghost touches prevent unlocking or safe input. Disclose liquid exposure, drops and third-party screen repairs. A browser trace is useful reproduction evidence, but service usually requires direct diagnostics. For a new device, record the issue within the return window and ask official support before performing a factory reset.

On a used device, cover all four corners and the keyboard area using the used-screen inspection checklist. If touch works but a fixed dot remains visible, read the dead pixel guide.
