Preparation matters more than improvisation
The goal is not to prove a used display is perfect. It is to identify defects that affect use, price or safety before the transaction and create a record both parties understand. Confirm the exact model, original configuration, repair history, return window and responsibility for faults. For an in-person sale, choose a safe place with adjustable light, internet and power. For delivery, record continuously from the unopened package. A seller who refuses reasonable inspection or pushes you to skip key steps is a risk signal.
Core inspection areas
Structure, glass and assembly
With the display off and angled light, inspect scratches, cracks, pressure marks, coating wear and liquid evidence. Check whether bezel gaps are even, the screen is lifting or a laptop hinge pulls on the panel. A lifted screen with a swollen chassis may indicate battery expansion. Stop charging and pressing the device rather than continuing the test.
Display consistency
With the display on, check fixed bright, dark or colored pixels, lines, flicker and local patches. On LCD, inspect backlight bleed and viewing-angle changes in dark scenes. On OLED, look for fixed outlines from status bars, keyboards, navigation or games. Judge mild uniformity differences at normal brightness, distance and content; one long-exposure phone photo is not enough.
Touch, refresh and connected functions
On touch devices, cover corners, edges, the keyboard region and multi-touch gestures. On monitors and laptops, confirm target resolution, refresh rate, ports and brightness adjustment. The presence or absence of automatic brightness or adaptive color is only a clue and cannot prove screen authenticity without the model and repair history.
Inspection steps
- Verify identity: Match model, serial number, storage and warranty to the listing. Ask about replacement screens, liquid, drops and repairs, and keep the answers in transaction messages.
- Inspect with the screen off: Clean the surface under soft angled light and distinguish protector scratches from glass damage. Check the bezel, hinges, cable areas and unusual gaps.
- Check solid colors: Open the solid-color test at normal brightness and inspect black, white, red, green and blue. Verify suspicious dots with the dead pixel guide.
- Check dark scenes and gray: Inspect LCD uniformity with the uniformity test in realistic nighttime lighting. Briefly inspect OLED on mid-gray and colors for fixed outlines. Do not create extreme conditions by maximizing brightness in a black room.
- Cover the touch area: Draw slow parallel lines in the touch test, rotate and repeat, then cross-check with the system keyboard and pinch gestures. Test while charging only with a reliable power source.
- Verify refresh and real content: After confirming the system mode, use the refresh rate test for the browser's operating range, then play familiar video, scroll text and open daily apps. Browser results are not panel instrument measurements.
- Document the conclusion: Add defects to the order or inspection record and confirm price adjustment, return terms and included accessories before paying. Walk away from unresolved high-risk issues.
Common mistakes
- Checking only white: Bright pixels are easier to find on black, colored defects require several colors and burn-in often appears on gray.
- Running only test software: Browsers have system limits. Repeat checks in real apps, the system interface and both orientations.
- Calling every uneven area a defect: Viewing angle, reflections and camera exposure change appearance. Compare normal use.
- Ignoring repair risks: A working image does not prove assembly, water resistance, fingerprint sensing or ambient-light sensing is correct.
- Factory-resetting during inspection: Erasing data wastes time and may complicate lock-status checks. Follow the marketplace process for account removal and ownership first.
Final checklist
Before paying, complete identity and repair-history checks, screen-off appearance, five-color pixel inspection, dark uniformity, full-area touch, refresh settings, brightness adjustment, real content and defect evidence. A lifted screen, persistent ghost touch, fixed lines, large color patches or a seller blocking inspection are stronger reasons to walk away than ordinary cosmetic wear.
