First confirm what “stuck at 60Hz” means
A monitor can advertise 120Hz, 144Hz, 165Hz or more while the current connection exposes only 60Hz. That does not immediately prove a defective panel. The advertised maximum may apply only at certain resolutions, through a particular input, with a compatible GPU, or after enabling a monitor setting. A browser result near 60Hz means the browser is currently receiving callbacks around that rate; it cannot identify which part of the chain caused the limit.
Fix the problem in the right order
1. Select the correct display and refresh rate
On Windows, open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display, select the intended monitor, then choose a refresh rate. Microsoft notes that the available rates depend on the display and current mode. If a rate is marked as incompatible with the current resolution, selecting it may also change resolution. On supported Windows 11 hardware, Dynamic Refresh Rate can vary the active rate; temporarily choosing a fixed mode can simplify testing.
On macOS, open System Settings → Displays, select the external display and use the Refresh Rate menu when available. ProMotion, Adaptive Sync and fixed rates are different choices. Apple recommends selecting a fixed rate when matching a professional video frame rate.
2. Verify resolution and monitor input mode
High refresh is not independent of resolution. A connection may support 144Hz at 1920×1080 but only 60Hz at a higher resolution or color depth. Select the native resolution first, then compare the available rates with the manufacturer’s mode table. In the monitor menu, look for input-version, overclock, high-refresh, gaming or DisplayPort compatibility settings. Change only settings documented for the model.
3. Trace the physical connection
Write down every component between the GPU and display: source port, cable, adapter, dock, KVM, capture device and monitor input. The weakest component determines the available mode. Test a direct connection before blaming the monitor. On desktop PCs with a dedicated graphics card, make sure the monitor is connected to the card’s output rather than an unrelated motherboard output.
A cable label alone does not guarantee the complete path. Verify the source and destination port capabilities, cable rating, adapter limits and supported resolution-rate combination. If the monitor has multiple HDMI or DisplayPort inputs, they may not expose identical modes.
4. Check the GPU control panel and driver
Open the Intel, AMD or NVIDIA display control panel and confirm the selected resolution and rate. Some drivers separate PC display modes from TV-oriented modes. Avoid custom timings until the standard supported modes, direct connection and current driver have been checked. Update the graphics driver from the device or GPU manufacturer when the monitor is misidentified or high-rate modes are missing.
A driver-specific regression is possible. For example, NVIDIA documented a case where certain game refresh-rate options disappeared when scaling was performed on the display; its workaround was to select GPU scaling and restart. Apply vendor workarounds only when the documented symptom and driver version match your system.
5. Reduce the display chain
Disconnect extra displays, docks and adapters temporarily. Test one monitor directly at native resolution. If the target mode appears, add components back one at a time. This is especially useful for laptops and high-resolution multi-monitor setups, where port bandwidth or internal display resources may be shared.
Verify the result
- Confirm the selected rate in the operating-system display information.
- Check the monitor’s information screen for the received resolution and rate.
- Keep the browser tab visible and run the Screen Detect refresh rate test several times.
- Compare motion behavior with the motion clarity test.
- If the system and monitor both report the target mode but one app remains at 60Hz, investigate that app’s frame cap, window mode, vertical synchronization and power profile.
A browser reading of 119.x for a selected 120Hz mode, or 143.x for 144Hz, can be normal. Look for a stable range close to the selected mode rather than an exact integer.
When hardware compatibility is the likely cause
If the target mode never appears with a direct connection, current drivers and the documented monitor input configuration, compare the GPU output and monitor input specifications at the exact resolution and color settings. Older hardware may not support the display’s highest mode. Some high-resolution, high-refresh combinations rely on Display Stream Compression, which also requires compatible hardware across the chain.
